Dry lips. What could possibly be worse? Ok, well a lot of things I guess, but they’re still obnoxious! Which is why I love keeping some good old fashioned home made lip chap around the house to protect my smoochies from drying out. Because, no offense to Chapstick, but homemade works so much better.
Can’t make them now? Pin this image to remember it for later!
Most lip chap recipes out there use beeswax as a hardening and protecting ingredient. And while I use beeswax in some of my recipes, I enjoy many spa products without it. The damage to our bee population is no joke, so even if you aren’t wanting to eliminate beeswax from your spa crafting completely, reducing it is still a great way to help your hobby be more sustainable. So whether you refrain from beeswax for ethical or ecological reasons, this recipe is for you! (and me…)
In place of the beeswax we’ll be using candelilla wax! I get mine from Bramble Berry.
It is made from the candelilla plant to make it a seamless vegan substitution. Just like beeswax, it will act as a perfect hardening, protecting and conditioning ingredient.

Begin by melting your wax, butter and oil together.
Once they’re all melted, go ahead and add in your flavor oil if you are using it. One of my favorite flavor oils is the Classic Watermelon by Crafter’s Choice.
If you’re using essential oils make sure they’re properly diluted.
Now set out your empty lip chap containers with their lids off and fill em up! If you’re looking for some containers, you can grab the ones I’m using in this tutorial here.
Pouring the mix with a container that has a narrow spout will make this part easier.
Finally, pop the suckers in the fridge and wait (oh so impatiently) for them to harden. You’ll want to make sure they’re fully cooled before you use them otherwise you’ll get some smooshy lip chap that won’t want to go back in its container very easily.
Enjoy! Now let’s get to making yours:
Save your smoochies with this beeswax-free lip balm recipe that works even better than the store bought stuff!
- 1 1/2 tsp Candelilla Wax
- 3 tsp Cocoa Butter
- 3 tsp Coconut Oil
- 1/4 tsp Flavor Oil *optional
- 5 0.15oz Empty Lip Tubes
Melt and combine the candelilla wax, cocoa butter and coconut oil either in the microwave or a double boiler.
Add the flavor oil if you have chosen to use some.
Pour the mixture in the empty tubes and set them in the fridge to cool completely before use.
