Why the Do It Better Yourself Club?
Years ago Jessica went to create a Twitter biography, and she initially described herself as a “do it yourself”. But that didn’t sit quite right with her. When people think of DIY they usually think cheap or unprofessional. Ewe. So she added in “better” because anyone that is a committed hobbyist knows, it’s not just about doing it yourself, it’s about doing it better. So take a look around and JOIN US!
DIBY Club Origins
This video is an incredibly personal insight into the creation of the DIBY Club by founder, Jessica Hooley. What began as a small DIY blog has become an education and support platform for women like her mother to find strength and comfort through progression, achievement and community.

Hey there DIBY Clubber! Gosh, who woulda thunk it would be so difficult to tell you all “about myself”? I am a young mother of three rough and tumble little boys. I’m a Christian. I have a serious Dr. Pepper addiction. Ummm…I have a phobia of throwing up. This isn’t going very well is it? Onto the stuff you might actually care about…
I have been a DIBY-er for as long as I can remember. I’m what I like to call a “hacker”. I love to find problems and figure out a way to hack my way into a resolution.
When I was 12 years old I was bothered that I couldn’t legally get a job so I asked my dad for an instructional book to learn Photoshop. After I learned the basics, I began designing real estate flyers for him at a whopping $20 a pop. It was the first real money I made for myself and gave me a bug I haven’t been able to shake since. The bug of self-education.
My greatest joy and fulfillment comes from learning. I did not go to college but I have never stopped my education. I could bore you with a history of the classes or books or hobbies I have enjoyed over the years, but it all comes down to one sentiment. I believe that some of the most important elements to happiness are an insatiable curiosity to discover, gratitude to appreciate how far you have come and humility to understand that you will never know it all – and to be completely okay with that.
I started the DIBY Club because I realized how much I have grown from these discoveries and wanted to share these blessings with others. I wanted a place for women to help each other. I want them to see the value of their ability and to pursue it with vigor. I want everyone to see themselves as I do – endlessly capable, and absolutely worth the journey.
